"An Education Bill being published later this year will outline plans to stop schools abusing rules on exclusions by permanently barring too many pupils.
"For the first time, schools in England will be responsible for finding - and funding - alternative education for all expelled children. The duty is currently carried out by local authorities.
"Schools will also be forced to include pupils' academic performance in official league table data - even if they have been permanently excluded for serious offences."
