"Millions of passengers will be hit by the first national rail strike for 16 years when workers begin a four-day walkout immediately after Easter.

"Signallers, maintenance workers and supervisors will strike from April 6 in a row over job losses and changes to working practices unless a last-minute deal can be struck with managers.

"The stoppage was announced last night. It coincides with the return to work for millions of people on the Tuesday after the Bank Holiday weekend and has been designed to cause maximum chaos for commuters.

"The signallers will hold two four-hour stoppages at rush hour on each of the strike days from 6am until 10am and from 6pm to 10pm. Network Rail conceded that the strike would cause massive disruption over the four days, when passengers would normally take 3.4 million journeys per day."
