RAF plane sent to evacuate Britons

"An RAF Hercules transport aircraft has landed in Tripoli as part of the Government effort to evacuate Britons trapped in the violence-hit country.

"The C130 is one of two that had been placed on standby to boost capacity being provided by a number of charter planes, a Government official travelling with Prime Minister David Cameron in the Gulf said.

"It touched down in the Libyan capital as the first Government-chartered plane sent to retrieve hundreds of stranded Britons was due to set off back to the UK.

"Another plane chartered by oil company BP, carrying around 120 people, was expected to land back at Gatwick this morning."
