Mississippi cresting in Memphis as key spillway opened

"MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Reuters) - The Mississippi River was beginning to crest on Monday at a near-record level in Memphis while downstream the federal government opened a spillway to relieve flooding pressure on low-lying New Orleans. "The government also prepared to open a second Louisiana spillway to ease flows at New Orleans and Baton Rouge as the state began to relocate inmates from the Angola state prison. "Downstream from Memphis, communities north and south of Vicksburg, Mississippi, without levees already were inundated and other residents near the swollen banks of the largest river in North America eyed their flood protections uneasily. The massive Mississippi was expected to take about a full day to crest at Memphis at the second highest level on record, just inches shy of its 1937 mark, said John Sirmon, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Memphis."
