There were long tailbacks as ice and snow made roads across much of the South East impassable, with 4 inches falling in some areas and more predicted throughout the day.There were queues of up to 30 miles long in “apocalyptic” scenes in the early hours of this morning as police, snow ploughs and gritting lorries struggled to treat the roads.
Temperatures in the area plunged to as low as -3C, and many motorists abandoned their vehicles for service stations.
