How bad doctors can hide failings

Doctors will be able to block the release of data showing how their patients fared after surgery or treatment, which will undermine the ability of patients to identify best practice. The situation was described as “farcical”.
Jeremy Hunt, the Health Secretary, has repeatedly lauded the new league tables of doctors which are supposed to allow patients to find the top performers and opt to be treated by them. Mr Hunt had hoped that the system, to be introduced next month, would drive up standards across the NHS and save hundreds of lives by exposing substandard doctors.
However, The Daily Telegraph has established that doctors are being contacted by the NHS and being asked if “their” data can be released.
