EU set to ban Iranian oil imports

Negotiations on the oil embargo have been ongoing since a meeting of European envoys in December, but last night a diplomat announced that a consensus had finally been agreed.

Objections to the oil embargo had previously been lodged by Greece, which gets a third of its oil supplies from Iran. Spain and Italy are also thought to depend heavily on oil from the country.

Formal acceptance of the measures is expected to be finalised by EU foreign ministers on January 30, but are likely to come into force much later. If they are officially agreed, it could result in a spike in petrol prices.
