"An engine capable of driving a spacecraft tens of millions of miles through the solar system to the planet Mercury is being built by British engineers.

"The engineers at QinetiQ, the technology company created out of the government Defence Evaluation Research Agency, have won a contract to build the engine for the European Space Agency's mission to the nearest planet to the Sun.

"The deal, which was signed last week, will put British engineering at the centre of Europe's first scientific mission to the inner solar system, driving the BepiColombo spacecraft on a spiralling 50-year journey round the Sun."
