British troops 'could withdraw from Afghanistan before next Christmas'

"During a surprise pre-Christmas visit to Helmand today, David Cameron said he was cautiously optimistic about the situation in Afghanistan.

"However, General Sir David Richards, the Chief of the Defence Staff who accompanied Mr Cameron, was more bullish and said he had been taken aback by developments in the past three months. He insisted that the forces have at last ... got the resources to complete their mission.

"The Prime Minister pledged to end all British combat operations in the country by 2015 and said it was now possible that troops will begin returning before the end of next year."
