Australian floods wreak havoc on Queensland economy

"As well as severe damage to more than 30,000 homes this week, and thousands more in flooding earlier this month in the state's north, the government will be faced with a huge bill for infrastructure torn apart by the raging waters.

"It is likely that roads, bridges, sewerage lines, and electricity and communications infrastructure will have to be replaced once the muddy water subsides.

"Campbell Newman, the Brisbane Lord Mayor, has warned that the Brisbane River transport infrastructure had been "substantially destroyed", while the Local Government Association of Queensland estimated that up to 55,000 miles of council roads had been damaged."
