Australia Raises Rates for a Third Time

"HONG KONG Australia, whose economy rebounded rapidly this year after the global financial turmoil, on Tuesday raised interest rates by a quarter of a percentage point for a third straight month, highlighting policy makers' confidence that the economy will continue on its upward path.

"The move marked the first time that the Reserve Bank of Australia had raised the cost of borrowing three times in a row, and it appeared to indicate that the bank's decision makers were undeterred by the global jitters set off by Dubai's decision last week to defer repayment of some debt.

"The increase Tuesday, which took the key cash rate to 3.75 percent, had been widely expected. But it nonetheless provided a fresh reminder of Australia's resilience in the wake of the global crisis, fallout from which continues to dog most other developed economies."
