Apprentices more useful than graduates, employers say
Jessica Shepherd
"Employers find apprentices are worth more to their businesses than university graduates, a poll has shown. City & Guilds, which awards qualifications for apprentices, surveyed 500 employers. Half had hired apprentices, and 52% of those employers said they were better value than graduates.
"But a fifth of all the businesses surveyed said the current economic climate made it too risky to take on an apprentice.
"Chris Jones, chief executive officer of City & Guilds, said there were too many barriers, such as paperwork. Karren Brady, vice-chair of West Ham United football club, said apprenticeships were "key to the future of the country"."
