Following Frank Lloyd Wright's famous aphorism, "There is no architecture without philosophy", this talk analyses the links and bridges between the fields of architecture and philosophy. Focusing specifically on architecture and hospitality, Klaus Benesch examines the importance of building in American history and outlines the central argument of his next book, Architecture and the Construction of Ideas, which explores the use of architecture by thinkers and philosophers of modernity as a metaphor for their critique of society and capitalism.

À travers trois réalisations de l'architecte américain Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), Céline Bonicco-Donato analyse la manière dont celui-ci s'est inspiré de plusieurs courants de la philosophie américaine (notamment le transcendantalisme de Ralph Waldo Emerson et le pragmatisme de John Dewey) afin de développer sa propre philosophie architecturale et urbaine, travaillée par deux grands principes : "l'intérieur est un dehors, l'extérieur est un dedans" et "la partie est à la partie ce que la partie est au tout".

Roosevelt’s Political Discourse: Grounded in a Liberal Protestant Worldview par Andrew Ives, publié le 05/03/2015
This paper will argue that Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s political discourse was profoundly influenced by his liberal Protestant worldview. The paper begins with some background on Roosevelt’s Christian upbringing. It moves on to show how FDR consistently used Protestant precepts and Biblical allusions as a rhetorical tool to gain electoral support. However, the author argues that Roosevelt’s simple yet profound Christian faith went far beyond this purely rhetorical usage and that liberal Protestant teachings in fact structured his political philosophy.

This can make people of hard religious belief to be intensely intolerant. How can we easily accept those who violate or dismiss principles that we consider the foundational to the moral order of the universe? And, by definition, they are that because we do not comprehend them in the same way as we comprehend objects and beings which we are capable of experiencing with our senses or those mathematic idealities that we understand. Faith therefore allows us to perceive the realities of God, His attributes, His angels and other entities and qualities of the same kind. It equally convinces us that, as human beings, we have the capacity for reaching these truths of a different kind than those of our senses or of our reason in the conventional sense within ourselves, and therefore posses an aptitude for the supernatural or the absolutely comprehensible.

Au vingtième siècle, la culture fut dominée par un immense génie Rabindranath Tagore, l’un des plus grands philosophes et poètes de l’histoire du monde. On a dit de Rabindranath Tagore (7 mai 1861-7 août 1941) qu’il fut le Léonard de Vinci de la Renaissance bengali. Tagore naît le 7 mai 1861 au Bengale, à Calcutta, la plus importante ville de l’Inde à cette époque. Il est le quatorzième enfant d’une famille aisée, il grandit dans l’ombre d’un père savant et réformateur religieux. Dans une vision prophétique, son père lui donna le prénom « Robindra » qui signifie le soleil « car plus tard comme lui, il ira par le monde et le monde sera éclairé ».

In the Euro Atlantic world today, two different and quite contingent forces are giving neoliberalism a new shape: on the one hand, financialization is configuring states, firms, associations and subjects in terms of capital valuation or credit worthiness (as opposed to productivity, efficiency, cost-benefit or interest maximization), and on the other hand, austerity regimes are effecting enormous shrinkages in human well being through cuts in jobs, pay, benefits and services.

You turn on a video game, and immediately you exist in three separate forms : you are that self on the couch, sitting in the physical space, watching the TV, holding the remote in your hand, you are the avatar on the screen, the character which you control and manipulate, and you’re a sort of third entity, an amalgamation of the two of you, of real and unreal, person and avatar, of gamer and character.

Les « tables d'affinités » établies par les chimistes ont souvent servi de modèle aux rencontres sentimentales. Or, la concordance et la discordance qui résultent des affinités sont plus proches des phénomènes musicaux, où les associations redistribuent infiniment les correspondances harmoniques. Pierre Bayard, auteur de Comment parler des livres que l'on n'a pas lus, abordera cette question avec Wendy Lesser, auteur de Music for Silenced Voices : Shostakovich and His Fifteen Quartets, et François Noudelmann, qui explore, dans Le Toucher les philosophes (en cours de traduction) la relation que Barthes, Sartre et Nietzsche avaient avec leur propre pratique du piano. The affinity tables established by chemists served as models for sentimental encounters. But the concordance and discordance resulting from affinities are closer to musical phenomena, where associations infinitely redistribute harmonic correlations. Pierre Bayard, author of How to Talk About Books You Haven't Read, will discuss this topic with Wendy Lesser, author of Music for Silenced Voices: Shostakovich and His Fifteen Quartets, and François Noudelmann, who explores in Le toucher des philosophes (to be translated) the relationship that Barthes, Sartre and Nietzsche had to their own practise of the piano.

Que se passe-t-il lorsque le « courant passe » entre des individus (ou dans certaines situations) et qu'est-ce qui manque quand ce n'est pas le cas ? Comment ce phénomène dépasse-t-il les descriptions traditionnelles des ensembles et des communautés ? What pulls communities and individuals together? What drives them apart? What's going on when people or situations have "chemistry" or click, and what's missing when they don't? How does this bypass more conservative descriptions of ensembles and community?

Réunissant des spécialistes français et américains des questions religieuses, cet évènement était l'occasion de faire le point sur ces "nouvelles conflictualités" qui sont souvent la conséquence de préjugés et de pratiques culturelles spécifiques à chaque nation. Ce texte a été écrit par Mark Lilla, philosophe et professeur à l'Université de Columbia.

Morale et politique dans "Resistance to Civil Government" (Henry David Thoreau) par Michel Granger , publié le 16/01/2008
Très connu pour avoir inspiré l'action de Gandhi et de Martin Luther King, « Résistance au gouvernement civil » (« La désobéissance civile ») entre à l'évidence dans la catégorie des essais politiques, mais Thoreau y traite de politique à sa manière, selon le point de vue d'un individualiste qui possède un certain sens de la collectivité. On n'y trouvera pas de théorie du gouvernement : l'organisation de la société et l'exercice du pouvoir passent au second plan, car tout est ramené à l'individu et à son intégrité morale. Significativement, l'opposition entre la loi et le bien est marquée de façon péremptoire dans un aphorisme mémorable : « It is not desirable to cultivate a respect for the law, so much as for the right. »
