Literature, Sound and the Egyptian Uprising

- Egypt's Arab Spring was experienced as a mediated event in two notable ways. First, in the immediate successes of Tahrir Square, Facebook was heralded as a fundamental agent of the uprising and responsible for the fall of Mubarak. Second, the failure of the 'Spring' with the election of an Islamist and a counter-revolution that saw the rise of a military dictatorship, news reports sought to make sense of the country's rapidly flailing political fortunes. Missing from both these forms of mediation are the voices of the rioters, their coordinated spontaneity and their very acts of resistance. While numerous images of the protests were captured, individual stories and lives were drowned out by the raucous cacophony of the masses. Assuming an extended view of the media terrain that recorded the uprising, this seminar seeks to recover the lost voices of Egypt's Arab Spring. It focuses on two novels by Robert Omar Hamilton and Yasmin El Rashid to drill down into how intimate stories and individual voices provide an alternative method to inform our knowledge of crowd violence. It will illustrate how narrative discourses can contribute in critical and strategic ways to reclaiming what has been lost or unheard in the seeming media decadence that characterised the uprising.

In Haltet euer Herz bereit erzählt Maxim Leo von seiner eigenen Familiengeschichte in der DDR. Im Mittelpunkt stehen zwei Figuren, Maxims Mutter, die er Anne nennt, und ihr Vater Gerhard, die moralische Instanz und der Vertreter der Macht. Gerhard Leo war ein Held und Résistance-Kämpfer, der von der SS gefoltert wurde, und in der Uniform eines französischen Soldaten nach Deutschland zurückkehrt ist. Als überzeugter Kommunist ließ er sich nach dem Krieg in der DDR nieder. Seine Lieblingstochter Anne, Maxims Mutter, trat die Partei ein, heiratete aber den Künstler Wolf, der den DDR-Staat für einen Verbrecherstaat erklärte und die Regeln brach, die sie immer beachtete. Anne brauchte Jahrzehnte, um sich von ihrem Vater zu lösen, ohne ihre Überzeugungen zu verraten. Maxim Leo blickt in die Vergangenheit zurück und erzählt von den Konflikten und Kompromissen in seiner Familie, die für die ganze DDR-Gesellschaft exemplarisch sind.

Antonia Pallach a accepté de nous rencontrer et de nous parler de son travail au sein de l'Université Toulouse 1. Qu'est-ce qu'une langue, en quoi est-elle fondamentale dans la constitution d'un individu ou d'une nation, comment l'enseigner? Quels sont les projets développés dans son département? Le témoignage d'Antonia Pallach est d'autant plus intéressant qu'il nous permet aussi de nous pencher sur des questions essentielles de l'Histoire d'Espagne : à travers son expérience et son vécu, celle-ci nous livre des renseignements sur la résistance contre le franquisme en dehors de la péninsule ibérique, des réflexions sur la mémoire historique, sa définition, ses réalités, ses contradictions... Cet entretien vient compléter celui de Teresa Albareda, il aborde des sujets qui suscitent de nombreux problèmes dans l'état espagnol, mais à travers un point de vue complètement différent.
