The transcendentalist approach to wilderness in US culture

- This presentation tackles the significance and legacy of the Transcendentalist understanding of wilderness in US culture. It begins with a brief overview of the largely hostile attitudes toward wilderness that pre-dated Transcendentalism. Then it introduces and analyses the ways in which two prominent Transcendentalist thinkers – Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau – conceived of wilderness. The third part of the presentation explores the influence of Transcendentalist thought on successive generations of US environmentalist all the way to the present time. In conclusion, the views of the contemporary critics of the idea of wilderness in environmentalist circles are briefly discussed.

- “Meritocracy” is the comic honorific that the American elite has awarded to itself in recognition of its accomplishments since the end of the Cold War. The coinage has proved to be a lasting and significant one because it does so many kinds of necessary work at once. “Meritocracy” assuages the inherent tension that exists between the terms “elite” and “popular democracy” by suggesting that the new American elite has earned its position in an entirely democratic way. Yes, we do have an elite, the word admits, as other nations do: but our elite merely consists of the most “meritorious” members of our democracy, and so any potentially troubling contradiction dissolves in a pleasurable way that both the early Puritans and their plutocratic descendents might easily recognize. The fortunes of the founders of Google and Facebook provide us with reassuring proof that the more we have, the more deserving we are.

- We speak confidently and playfully about the “death of the author” but not one wants to seriously consider the death of literature. But this is precisely what we risk when we treat literature as ethnography, or worse, as the last living remnants of what seem to be vanishing cultures. We don’t read novels, at any rate, to educate ourselves. Or if we do we shouldn’t. And if we do commit this soul error we don’t enjoy novels because of the information they contain. Rather, we enjoy them, we clutch novels to our very souls because they move us, surprise us, transport us, entertain us, shock us, and (ultimately) trick us into caring about people and places that don’t exist and never existed.

All of the conventions of literary fiction can be successfully broken except one: there must be subtext, a second story beneath the surface. We don’t have to care about a protagonist or even really have a protagonist. We’re not limited to any particular style or structure. But our entire idea of literature being “about” something is based on a second narrative, something else that the surface narrative can point to. What’s interesting to me about this is that we live in a time when surface narratives are taking over. Blogs are generally so worthless for this one reason, that they lack subtext. The online world is, above all, earnest, saying exactly what it means.

Their trademarks, which are also recognizable in his varied artistic productions – clumsy execution, sloppy handwriting, disturbing or puzzling text, dark humour and uncanny atmosphere – helped Shrigley to gradually shape a clearly distinctive personality in his work which brought him out as one of the current key figures of British contemporary art scene."

A la suite de l'élection de David Cameron au poste de leader en 2005, le renouvellement de l'équipe dirigeante, la nouvelle tonalité du discours conservateur et le projet de rénovation du parti ont contribué à alimenter la thèse d'une rupture avec l'héritage thatchérien. Cet article a pour objectif de tenter d'évaluer la pertinence de cette analyse en proposant un examen des principales caractéristiques et sources d'inspiration du "nouveau" conservatisme. Il s'agira également de tenter d'évaluer sa capacité à produire une nouvelle synthèse susceptible d'emporter l'adhésion au-delà du périmètre électoral naturel du parti conservateur et de marginaliser durablement les opposants dans son propre camp.

In opposition, Conservative leaders such as Margaret Thatcher and David Cameron adopted quite different strategies to deal with Scotland and devolution. Mrs Thatcher's intention was to avoid splitting her own party over the devolution issue in advance of the 1979 devolution referendum,with an emphasis on party management. Cameron has had to deal with a more complex picture due to the institutional reality of devolution, the unpopularity of the Conservatives in Scotland and the election of the SNP government in 2007. This environment brought a cautious but positive approach to Scotland from Cameron, involving five different strands of territorial management in preparation for the 2010 UK general election.

Quelques considérations théoriques sur la technique du pastiche littéraire comme écriture imitative intertextuelle sont suivies d’ exemples extraits de la littérature de langue anglaise contemporaine (notamment Peter Ackroyd, David Lodge et Mark Crick), soulignant ce qu’A.S. Byatt appelle “greedy rewriting“, cette réécriture gourmande des textes canoniques qui fait littéralement revivre les récits des écrivains du passé proche ou lointain.

- An unmanned canteen, food leftovers are spilt over the floor. Una, a young woman in her late twenties, pays a visit to Ray at his workplace; a photo of him in a trade magazine has put her on his track. The last time she saw him, she was twelve and he was over forty, they haven’t set eyes on each other since. Ray happens to be her former lover, the man who took her virginity when she was not even pubescent. Together they go over grievous memories: the disgrace that followed the disclosure of their affair for both Una whose parents refused to quit the neighbourhood exposing her to public humiliation, and Ray who spent six years in prison. Gradually, bygone feelings resurface questioning the morally unacceptable nature of their relationship.

Très connu pour avoir inspiré l'action de Gandhi et de Martin Luther King, « Résistance au gouvernement civil » (« La désobéissance civile ») entre à l'évidence dans la catégorie des essais politiques, mais Thoreau y traite de politique à sa manière, selon le point de vue d'un individualiste qui possède un certain sens de la collectivité. On n'y trouvera pas de théorie du gouvernement : l'organisation de la société et l'exercice du pouvoir passent au second plan, car tout est ramené à l'individu et à son intégrité morale. Significativement, l'opposition entre la loi et le bien est marquée de façon péremptoire dans un aphorisme mémorable : « It is not desirable to cultivate a respect for the law, so much as for the right. »
