Coalition at war over 'plot’ to oust Nick Clegg

Michael Gove, the Education Secretary, and Philip Hammond, the Defence Secretary, accused Dr Cable of undermining Mr Clegg and forcing him to be seen to block flagship Government policies.

The accusations led to a fierce rebuke from senior Liberal Democrats, who retaliated by accusing the Conservative ministers of seeking to deflect attention from the turmoil facing their own party over the issue of an EU referendum.

Disagreements about two of the Coalition’s key policy areas – child care and Europe – have prompted one of the most serious crises in relations between the two parties.
