From page to screen: between betrayal and re-creation in the film adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Half of a Yellow Sun

- This article examines the film adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s 2006 novel, Half of a Yellow Sun. Released in 2014, Biyi Bandele’s adaptation was often criticized for its alleged betrayal of the original text. The task of adapting a novel of more than four hundred pages in a film of less than two hours was particularly daunting. Yet, it remains to be seen whether the film deserved to be labelled as unfaithful. Rather than judging the worth of an adaptation based on its degree of loyalty to the source text, spectators could also regard the adaptation as a commentary and even possibly as an independent work of art. Relying on adaptation theory, this paper will consider whether Bandele’s infidelities allow for a potential re-reading of Adichie’s novel.

- [Fiche] Pre-Raphaelite women artists assimilated the type of the erudite woman that had been forged by their male counterparts: they complied with the canon, yet slightly shifted it by softening the usual rejection of the learned woman and emphasising the idea of freedom linked to the possession of knowledge. From the (twin) figures of the governess and the Angel in the House (two forms of possession of knowledge deemed acceptable for women by Victorian society) to the image of the sorceress (the embodiment of Evil), by way of the representation or lack of representation of the professional scholar woman, we shall endeavour to embrace the different types of knowledgeable women created by women artists in 19th-century British art.

- La voix d'un enfant chantonne pendant que sa main ouvre une boîte. Contre-plongée. Nous découvrons un crayon, des fusains, des pastels, des billes, une clé, des pièces, un petit couteau, une montre, et deux figurines de bois. Puis la main se saisit d'un fusain, commence à écrire, à dessiner. Le titre et les noms défilent, toujours sur fond de chansonnette insouciante, bientôt couverte par une belle musique. La montre, pourtant sans aiguilles, laisse entendre un tictac imaginaire. Le temps, l'histoire peut commencer.

- En regardant les anciens reportages de Life, les photos de Vivian Maier et de Saul Leiter, on se prend parfois à rêver. C'était comment New York, Brooklyn, dans les années 50 ? Pour le savoir, on peut rechercher les articles et les photos susmentionnés, relire quelques romans. On peut également voir Little Fugitive. En cette décennie où Hollywood dominait, Le petit fugitif, film de photographes, en partie autofinancé, avait toutes les chances de passer inaperçu, et de finir aux oubliettes. Heureusement pour nous, il n'en fut rien.

- Until about a year ago, I had lived my whole life in urban areas. The smallest cities I had ever called home was likely during graduate school, when I commuted between Arden Hills, Minnesota (population: 9,704) and Iowa City, Iowa (population: 67,862). And in fairness to Arden Hills and Iowa City, both communities are much larger than their census estimates, due in part to their proximity to other larger growing cities, and their migrating student populations. The largest city I had ever called home was Chicago, where I once lived for a year during college, in a small room so close to the elevated train tracks I could have thrown a baseball and hit the passing EL.

- Charulata (1964) est également connu sous son titre anglais : The Lonely Wife (La femme solitaire). Ce film est une adaptation du roman Nastanirh (Le nid brisé) de Rabindranath Tagore, publié en 1901. Les acteurs principaux sont Madhabi Mukherjee, Sailen Mukjerjee et Soumitra Chatterjee dans les rôles principaux de Chârulatâ, son mari Bhupati et son cousin Amal. Comme la plupart des films de Ray, ce film est en noir et blanc et dure 117 minutes. Il en a également composé la musique. Il a été produit par R. D. Banshai, et le directeur de la photo était Subrata Mitra. Celui-ci a fait la photo de la plupart des films de Ray et en particulier de ses premiers chefs-d'œuvre : la Trilogie d'Apu : Pather Panchali (La complainte du sentier, 1955), Apu Sansar (Le monde d’Apu, 1959) et Aparajito (L’Invaincu, 1956).

Satyajit Ray, ambassadeur de Tagore

- Il y a quelque chose de délicat, subtil, dans l’œuvre du cinéaste Satyajit Ray. Il nous prend par la main et nous invite à pénétrer une culture autre en douceur. On est immédiatement happé par son univers même si la langue et la culture sont distantes. Comment parvient-il à se faire l’ambassadeur de l’Inde en pleine mutation ? On suit ses films de l’intérieur. On est invité à placer notre regard au centre du film et non à l’extérieur, sans pour autant à aucun moment nous identifier aux personnages qui sont totalement autres. On se glisse derrière la caméra, et la lenteur des plans nous permet de nous imprégner de la vie qui se déroule. Les villageois passent le long d’un chemin, les personnages entrent et sortent des plans. Partout, qu’il tourne des scènes d’intérieur ou d’extérieur, le flux de la vie anime l’image...

A former journalist, Professor Zelizer's work focuses on the cultural dimensions of journalism, with a specific interest in journalistic authority, collective memory, and journalistic images in times of crisis and war. She also works on the impact of disciplinary knowledge on academic inquiry.

Les diverses déclinaisons de « X marks the spot » délimitent les pôles entre lesquels évolue cette quête de sens qui se fait jour à travers The Brooklyn Follies. « X marks the spot » évoque non seulement la croix du condamné à mort, le poids de la culpabilité, mais aussi les comptines pour enfants, l’insouciance, le jeu. Et si c’était ça, l’existence humaine ? Une suite de combinaisons aléatoires d’ombres et de lumières à travers lesquelles l’individu se fraye bon gré mal gré un chemin l’espace d’une vie. Moments de désespoir, de folie destructrice, mais aussi d’innocence retrouvée et d’adéquation au monde.

- An unmanned canteen, food leftovers are spilt over the floor. Una, a young woman in her late twenties, pays a visit to Ray at his workplace; a photo of him in a trade magazine has put her on his track. The last time she saw him, she was twelve and he was over forty, they haven’t set eyes on each other since. Ray happens to be her former lover, the man who took her virginity when she was not even pubescent. Together they go over grievous memories: the disgrace that followed the disclosure of their affair for both Una whose parents refused to quit the neighbourhood exposing her to public humiliation, and Ray who spent six years in prison. Gradually, bygone feelings resurface questioning the morally unacceptable nature of their relationship.
