The difficulty with young people is that they may not have experienced the dangers of not being able to escape your past until it’s too late. I like to tell the story of Stacy Sneider, the young 22 year old teacher in training who posted a picture of herself on Myspace wearing a pirate’s hat and drinking from a plastic cup that said drunken pirate. Her supervisor at the school said she was promoting drinking and she was fired. She sued and was unable to get her job back and she had to pick an entirely different career. That’s a very dramatic example on how vulnerable all of us are to being judged out of context by a single image or ill chosen picture and once you do that it may be very hard to escape your past.

The original World Trade Centre site was 16 acres which if my calculations are correct is about 10 hectares in French geographical terms. So it was a very large space in the centre of the downtown Wall Street business district in New York. Those two buildings were each 110 stories tall. Each floor was an acre square. So you had 10 million square feet of floor space in those buildings. It really was an attempt to build the largest buildings in the world and bring companies from around the world to do business in those buildings. Once the attacks came and the buildings collapsed, it emerged very quickly in the planning process that the actual footprints of the buildings, those places were the they stood, were considered sacred ground.

He will also play pieces by Donatoni, who shows how affinities can be volatile, Berio, who brilliantly manipulates free time versus measured time, Crumb, the modern American transcendentalist, who demonstrates the unity in diversity, Ohana, whose free counterpoints unfold organically and amalgamate as they will, and Mantovani, who, like Mahler, fuses the most exigent concert music with moments of carefree ebullience.

Au contraire, elles conduisent à des assemblages inattendus, à des agrégats de personnes et d'êtres qui défient les arrangements prétendument naturels. What happens when relations and community do not depend on natural formations or grids for their unfolding but create their own, often untrackable movements? Affinities have little to do with family ties or socially codified structures. They do not well up from a common spring or identified community. Rather, they lead to unexpected pairings and conglomerates of people and beings that defy supposedly natural arrangements.

Le féminisme et les mouvements gay, lesbien et queer ont brouillé les définitions de ce qui (et qui) est beau et ou ce qui (et qui) ne l'est pas. Les intervenants exploreront les réflexions et pratiques émancipatrices ayant contribué à révéler les structures cachées de la répression dans les domaines du genre, de la race et de l'âge, et ébranlé certains préjugés iconographiques obsolètes. Visual arts, fashion and media have strongly contributed to the transformation of the notion of beauty over the last few generations. Widely perceived of as an extension of femininity until the late 20th century, feminism and the gay, lesbian and queer movements have eroded clear definitions of who and what is beautiful - and who and what is not. French historian, dancer and choreographer François Chaignaud, American author of The Man in the Grey Flannel Skirt Jon-Jon Goulian, Austrian dancer and choreographer Silke Grabinger, and Salette Gressett, curatorial advisor for the exhibition at the Austrian Cultural Forum, will discuss how emancipatory artistic reflection and practice has fought to reveal the hidden structures of repression toward gender, race, and age and shake off antiquated visual preconceptions.

La narration est profondément enracinée dans l'esprit humain, à un niveau à la fois conscient et inconscient. Produire une narration est une façon de donner du sens à l'expérience factuelle. Mais les fictions créées par le cerveau humain et celles que les romanciers imaginent sont-elles de même nature ? L'écrivain américain Siri Hustvedt et le neurobiologiste français Lionel Naccache exprimeront leurs points de vue originaux, pénétrants et empathiques sur cette question. We all spend our time constructing fictions, telling stories to ourselves and to others. Narration is deeply rooted in the human mind, at a conscious and unconscious level. Producing a narrative is a way of giving meaning to factual experience. Are the fictions created by the human brain and those imagined by novelists of the same nature? American writer Siri Hustvedt and French neurobiologist Lionel Naccache express their original, incisive and empathetic views on these questions.

Promoting patients in narrative discourse: A developmental perspective par Harriet Jisa , publié le 18/12/2009

Languages provide speakers with a number of structural options for manipulating the expression of events in narrative discourse. Underlying narrative competence is the capacity to view events as dynamic actions composed of a bundle of elements such as, agent, patient, affectedness, etc. (Hopper and Thompson, 1980). This study examines the grammatical constructions used by children (5-6-, 7-8- and 10-11-year-olds) and adult speakers of Amharic, English, French and Hungarian to manipulate the expression of agent and patient participants in the expression of events. The narrative task used to elicit the data is composed of a series of pictures which recount the adventures of two principal characters (a boy and a dog) in search of their runaway frog (Frog, Where are you? Mayer 1969). Over the course of the story the boy and the dog encounter a host of secondary characters (a mole, an owl, a swarm of bees and a deer) and change participant status, going from controlling agent to affected patient of a secondary character's action. Our interest lies in the range of structures available in the languages studied and their use by children and adults in narrative discourse. We detail how children and adults native speakers of the four languages use topicalising constructions to promote the patient participant in an event to the starting point (Langacker, 1998) of the recounting of that event.

In the course of their development, children make their way along successive transitory systems with their own internal coherence. We will present the paths they follow from gestures and first words to complex constructions embedded in their dialogic context, developing both linguistic, conversational and social skills necessary to full mastery of language. Our data shows that the use of grammatical forms is irregular in terms of canonical syntax but not random, and corresponds to particular semantic/pragmatic features.

La parodie des Mille et une nuits par Poe dans « The Thousand-And-Second Tale Of Scheherazade » est bien plus qu’un exercice littéraire ludique comme on l’a souvent souligné. Cette parodie a été écrite pendant la grande période de développement du nationalisme américain dans un contexte particulièrement marqué par le populisme. C’est pendant cette période que la volonté d’avoir une littérature et une langue « purement américaines » commencent à s’imposer. Triomphe aussi de l’idéologie puritaine bien implantée, qui assujettit les nouveaux arrivants à sa propre vision et à ses propres mythes fondateurs.

La mort de l'intertexte : Les voies tortueuses de la voix textuelle dans Tamburlaine Must Die de Louise Welsh par Claude Maisonnat, publié le 09/10/2009

L’objet de ce travail est de problématiser la notion d’intertexte en prenant appui sur le court roman de Louise Welsh : Tamburlaine Must Die. Dans le sillage des études du généticien Louis Hay qui proposait dès 1985 que le texte n’existe pas, l’introduction propose d’argumenter que l’intertexte n’existe pas, il n’existe que des modalités d’intertextualité dont le point commun est le fantasme originaire : l’illusion que l’on pourrait identifier un point d’origine fixe et stable à l’écriture. En lieu et place de l’intertexte est alors postulée l’existence de ce qu’on pourrait appeler la voix textuelle, distincte de la voix auctoriale de l’autorité de l’auteur, qui serait en partie fondée sur la co-présence de multiples modalités d’intertextualité mais qui dépasse largement ce cadre si on la relie à la problématique analytique de l’objet-voix lacanien.

En attendant les barbares de Coetzee : réécrire la mort du Christ, refuser la Croix par Maxime Decout, publié le 09/10/2009

Ecrivain du XXIe siècle, Coetzee propose dans Waiting for the Barbarians une réécriture de la Passion du Christ qui interroge le rôle de la souffrance individuelle ou collective. L’homme chargé de vivre ce nouveau Calvaire découvre la vanité de la souffrance dans un monde privé de Dieu ainsi que l’impossibilité de toute rédemption. Cette communication tente de dépasser une lecture politique du texte en s’intéressant au fonctionnement de l’intertexte biblique.

Proche de l'indigestion intertextuelle : "Des Hottentotes" de Paul Di Filippo par Jérôme Dutel, publié le 09/10/2009

Prenant comme champ d’étude la novella trépidante "Hottentots", tirée de The Steampunk Trilogy (1995), de l’auteur américain Paul Di Filippo (1954-…), cette communication cherche à montrer comment l’auteur, en virtuose reconnu du pastiche et de la parodie littéraire mais aussi scientifique, démonte, à travers un récit brouillé et comme parfois étouffé par différents niveaux d’intertextualité, les mécanismes de création littéraire à l’œuvre dans la littérature fantastique et la science-fiction des XIXème et XXème siècles pour peut-être mieux révéler les idéologies qui pourraient avoir contribué à leur élaboration.

Entre raillerie et révérence : A Suitable Boy ou le pastiche renouvelé par Mélanie Heydari, publié le 09/10/2009

Pastiche de la grande tradition littéraire victorienne, A Suitable Boy, de Vikram Seth, se situe de manière éminemment originale dans le renouveau de la production littéraire postcoloniale. Entre raillerie et révérence, désir d’imitation et volonté de changement, ce roman-fleuve révèle l’affiliation de l’auteur aux canons victoriens : cette écriture délibérément lisse, sans aspérités, aux antipodes de celle d’un Rushdie, ne trahit en effet nulle autre appartenance, nulle généalogie.

Une réécriture gourmande du roman de langue anglaise : celle du pasticheur par François Gallix, publié le 09/10/2009

Cette communication a deux axes. Quelques considérations théoriques sur la technique du pastiche littéraire comme écriture imitative intertextuelle sont suivies d’ exemples extraits de la littérature de langue anglaise contemporaine (notamment Peter Ackroyd, David Lodge et Mark Crick), soulignant ce qu’A.S. Byatt appelle “greedy rewriting“, cette réécriture gourmande des textes canoniques qui fait littéralement revivre les récits des écrivains du passé proche ou lointain.
