"Something had come up, I told my visiting guests on Friday. I'd unexpectedly been detailed to cover a political story and would not be able to join them for the rest of the weekend.

"What they did not know was that the story was 6,900 miles away.

"I was alerted on Thursday that I might be asked to join a press pool for an off-the-record, highly sensitive trip with the president. The details were laid out Friday in a meeting with the White House press secretary, Robert Gibbs.

"Air Force One was towed from its hangar at Andrews Air Force Base at 9:55 p.m. on Saturday. After a takeoff that was slower and noisier than usual, it headed off with enough fuel to fly President Obama to Afghanistan. We left in darkness and arrived in darkness 13 hours later."
