The Blue People May Soon See Oscar Gold

"James Cameron's Avatar - now jokingly rendered as I See Blue People instead of Dances with Smurfs triumphed at the Golden Globes in a night when the biggest surprises came, perhaps, from the weather. Rain soaked the red carpet, which at least made it one of the few occasions when having an umbrella handler was not considered mere celebrity hubris. (The other being if you're Sophia Loren.)

"Most armchair predictions came true, including wins for Mo'Nique, Christoph Waltz, Meryl Streep, Sandra Bullock, Jeff Bridges and Pixar's Up. Some critical favorites - The Hurt Locker and Up in the Air among them - were largely shut out, but that's hardly a shock. The members of the Hollywood Foreign Press, which dole out the Globes, are journalists, sort of, but not critics; they are open about wanting to have more stars in the Beverly Hilton ballroom than the Oscars do at the Kodak Theater, and this year, in particular, looked to increase their TV audience. Asked what he would do the morning after the Globes, Philip Berk, the association's president, told the Bagger: Check the ratings."
