The American tradition of offering a week of concessions immediately after Thanksgiving has been imported to the UK and will see the consumer market flooded with lightning deals on items from Le Creuset cookware to Nintendo Wii consoles.

Amazon and Comet are expected to lead the shopping frenzy by offering five consecutive days of up to 50 per cent discounts.

But competition on the high street is tougher than ever, meaning that many stores have already launched sales in a bid to lure hard-up shoppers to the tills and will continue to slash prices until the end of the year.
