"The Pope will land in Edinburgh later this morning where he where he will meet the Queen, before addressing thousands of pilgrims at an open air mass in glasgow.

"He will then be in London until Sunday, when his visit culminates in a beatification ceremony for Cardinal John Henry Newman in Birmingham.

"However, the start of the visit has been overshadowed by Cardinal Walter Kasper, a senior aide to the Pope, who has pulled out of the trip after saying the country resembled a Third World country where aggressive new atheism is rife."
