Puerto Rico’s governor is vowing to turn the U.S. territory into the 51st state after statehood won in a non-binding referendum hit by a boycott and low turnout that raised questions about the vote’s legitimacy.
Gov. Ricardo Rossello told a couple hundred supporters waving U.S. flags late Sunday that he will soon create a commission to appoint two senators and five representatives to demand statehood from the U.S. Congress, which has to approve any changes to the island’s political status.
“The United States of America will have to obey the will of our people!” Rossello yelled to a crowd clutching U.S. flags and dancing to a tropical jingle that promoted statehood.

With nearly all of the precincts reporting, 97 percent of the ballots cast were in favor of statehood, a landslide critics said indicated that only statehood supporters had turned out to the polls. Opposition parties who prefer independence or remaining a territory boycotted the special election, which they considered rigged in favor of statehood.
On an island where voter participation often hovers around 80 percent, just 23 percent of registered voters cast ballots. Voting stations accustomed to long lines were virtually empty on Sunday.

Puerto Ricans on Sunday voted overwhelmingly in favor of becoming America’s 51st state — at least the ones who bothered going to the polls.
Around 97 percent of those casting ballots opted in favor of statehood, according to late returns. But only about 500,000 Puerto Ricans — about 23 percent of the electorate — voted.
Many groups who support the status quo urged a boycott of the vote, while others just didn’t turn up because it was a non-binding referendum.

Puerto Rico’s Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González-Colón touted Sunday’s vote for statehood, saying, “It is clear that the majority of Puerto Ricans want statehood.”
Puerto Rico voted overwhelmingly in favor of statehood, 97 percent according to reports, but low turnout has some worried that opponents will be able to use that against statehood advocates.
According to the Wall Street Journal, 97 percent voted for statehood, though turnout was only about 23 percent.
