Donald Trump Takes a Beating From Hollywood at Golden Globes

From the red carpet, to the stage at the Beverly Hilton, to the interview room backstage, Hollywood heaped its disdain on President-elect Donald Trump. Speakers said the man who will soon be in the Oval Office had done everything from stoke incivility at home to provoke hostilities that could lead to war abroad.
If Hollywood had any concern about how its anti-Trump message would play among the roughly half of Americans who supported Trump, it did not show.
The evening’s shadow guest made an early showing with host Jimmy Fallon’s first one-liner. “This is the Golden Globes — one of the few places left where America still honors the popular vote,” Fallon zinged. Soon after, he was invoking an apparent Trump fan, the leader of Russia, noting that the Globes votes were “tallied by the accounting firm of Ernst, Young and Putin.”

Turning attention away from her and toward Donald J. Trump, Meryl Streep used her acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes to call out the president-elect for mocking a disabled New York Times reporter in 2015, and warned that a free press would need to be defended. Ms. Streep campaigned for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election.
Some conservative commentators immediately criticized her decision to bring politics so vividly into the show. But the room roundly applauded her remarks, which included a plea to support the Committee to Protect Journalists.
“This instinct to humiliate, when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life, because it kinda gives permission for other people to do the same thing,” she said. “Disrespect invites disrespect, violence incites violence. And when the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.”

'La La Land' Dominates Golden Globe Awards

La La Land steamrolled through a Jimmy Fallon-hosted Golden Globes that mixed the expected, Champagne-sipping Hollywood celebration with often-voiced concern over president-elect Donald Trump.
Though La La Land dominated with seven awards, including best motion picture, comedy or musical, the night's final award went to Barry Jenkins' tender coming of age drama Moonlight. Its sole award was for best motion picture, drama.
But Meryl Streep, the Cecil B. DeMille Award honoree, supplied Sunday evening's most striking moment: a rebuke to Trump that stirred the Beverly Hilton Hotel crowd. Streep, who spoke at the Democratic National Convention, called the president-elect's mocking of a disabled reporter the year's performance that most "stunned her."
